Advising CAHA’s Board of Directions on topics related to nursing issues and nursing care, this committee provides perspective on current nursing topics from clinical nurse training through scope of practice issues and workforce/shortages. Committee membership includes representatives from local health systems, the Schools of Nursing and other representatives of nursing professionals throughout the Capital Area.

The Capital Area Community Nursing Network (CACNN) is a committee of the Capital Area Health Alliance that serves as a resource in identifying area challenges and issues facing nursing. The committee:

collaborates as a group in identifying solutions for these issues through community based initiatives.
provides a unique perspective on current nursing topics such as clinical nursing education, scope of practice issues, and workforce shortages.
advises the CAHA Board of Directors on topics related to nursing issues and nursing care.

CACNN is committed to the mission of the Capital Area Health Alliance to work together as nurses to empower our community to achieve better health.

Mission Statement
The Capital Area Community Nursing Network collaborates with community, academic, home and community, and health based agencies to identify solutions through community based initiatives for challenges facing nursing.

Strategic Goals
1 - Address the shortage of academically prepared Nursing clinical faculty
2 - Create sustainable partnerships to ensure a stable nursing workforce
3 - Use existing data to identify workforce issues
4 - Promote and recognize nursing clinical and professional excellence in all practice settings.

Future Work

• Develop a symposium on Health Information Technology for area Nurses in Spring of 2010, working with the Capital Area RHIO to bring Jane Foster, national nursing expert with specific Health Information Exchange experience to the area for a full day program. During the last four years Ms. Foster served as Clinical Director for one of the nation’s leading Health Information Exchanges. Her effective programs to educate clinicians on new electronic workflow processes, which offer practice improvements, as well as her reputation for improving patient care will present a compelling colloquium for nurses.

NURSING EXCELLENCE AWARD NOMINEES FOR 2009


Tiffany Doolittle, RN, BSN
Ms. Doolittle has been the principal nurse for the House Calls program at the Ingham County Health Department, a program for smoking cessation and tobacco treatment for pregnant and parenting women. She assisted in the development of a grant from the Legacy foundation, developed program materials, and trained 23 staff members who then implemented the program. To date, 250 women have been enrolled in the program. Access to nicotine replacement therapy is provided in the client’s home. Ms. Doolittle has enthusiasm for her work and is sensitive to clients’ needs. She continues to research the subject. She has served as a preceptor for an RN-BSN student this fall and takes students with her on home visits. She collaborates with other departments and agencies to advance the work of public health.


Marianne George, RN, BSN
Ms. George is an advocate for nursing staff workplace safety. In her more than 25 years at Sparrow Hospital, she has worked to better the lives of both the nurses and families of children who are patients in the Sparrow Regional Children’s Center. She serves as national faculty to the American Heart Association for Basic Life Support (BLS) and is the sole representative for Michigan. On as monthly basis, she teaches Infant/Child CPR to parents, grandparents and friends of vulnerable children. Her confident and gentle approach allows participants to learn what is necessary to promptly respond to any crisis. In addition, she teaches First Responders, gong as far as Ionia and Clinton Counties to assure the preparedness of those communities. She also serves on the regional faculty for Pediatric Advance Life Support Training (PALS).At Sparrow Hospital, Ms. George acts as an advocate for nurses’ safety in the area of back injury prevention. She spearheaded an initiative to get a hospital lift team established. She works continually on process improvement programs throughout the hospital including sharps safety, crash cart use and blue code evaluations.


Wendy Stanley, RN
Ms. Stanley is certified in GI nursing and is an active member of GI nursing organizations. She attends state and national conferences and shares what she learns with her co-workers. She is concerned about patient safety and is keenly interested in process improvement. Each summer, she volunteers a week of her vacation time to be a camp nurse, taking care of kids with asthma, diabetes, and other medical conditions so that they can have a safe and enjoyable camping experience. Ms. Stanley is well-respected by her colleagues and is dedicated to her profession. She volunteers in the Women’s Expo each year and participates in the Race for the Cure, raising funds to fight breast cancer.

Jeannette Wrona Klemczak. MSN, RN
Ms. Klemczak has contributed to the profession of nursing for nearly four decades. She is currently serving as Michigan’s Chief Nurse Executive, appointed by the Governor in 2004, to address nursing workforce issues and provide nursing’s unique perspective to health care improvement. Additionally, Ms. Klemczak continues in a part-time faculty role in the College of Nursing at Michigan State University. Prior to her role as Chief Nursing Executive, she developed the College of Nursing’s faculty group practice and its first nurse-managed primary care center, serving more than 3,000 U.S. veterans in the tri-county area as part of a contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs. For 19 years before going to MSU,
Ms. Klemczak served the community and state in several nursing consultant, management, and administrative roles with the (former) Michigan Department of Public Health program, such as Children’s Special Health Care Services, Maternal and Child Health, and the Bureau of Public Health. Her early years in nursing included several positions in hospitals in southeast Michigan in public health, mental health, and pediatrics. Ms. Klemczak’s most significant contribution is the promotion of nursing education and workforce enhancement. She has made a positive impact on healthcare in the greater Lansing area by leveraging funding to allow individuals to pursue nursing as a profession. 

 

Nursing Excellence Award Honoree 2009

Maureen Dillon, RN

Ms. Dillon is a registered nurse who has worked in the obstetrical field for many years. Her roles have included staff RN, charge nurse, educator, assistant manager and, currently, outreach coordinator for Women’s and Children’s Services at Sparrow Hospital. Her work as a board member and educator with Tomorrow’s Child has helped to create a strong program in the Lansing area hospitals. She has helped to implement the Safe Sleep Program in the hospital and is committed to keeping infants safe and helping to reduce the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome.

Ms. Dillon has developed the outreach program for Women’s and Children’s Services at Sparrow. She helps coordinate and participate in many of the health fairs that are held in the community to help educate people. She developed a CPR class for families who have new babies born at Sparrow Hospital, the first program of its kind in Michigan. This program will be featured at a poster presentation at the National Association for Women’s Health and Neonatal Nursing convention in 2010. In collaboration with Tomorrow’s Child, Ms. Dillon helped establish the Safe Sleep initiative at Sparrow Hospital. Patients sign an agreement to follow safe sleep guidelines and are given a sleep sack for the baby at discharge.

In addition, Ms. Dillon works with the community bereavement program. She established CARE pages for patients to enable them to communicate with their family and friends during hospitalization. She participates in the Women’s Heart Committee and is an organizer for the Baby Walk and the Women Working Wonders Walk, which are held annually within our community. She is committed to improving the health of people in mid-Michigan and exemplifies the many roles of nurses in their communities.
